◊ Do I Really Need A Facial Cleansing Brush?
Face cleansing brushes are tools with bristles on the end to work with the cleanser on your skin and give a better, deeper, and gently exfoliating cleanse compared with just applying cleanser manually.
Face brushes are typically expensive. Is it really worth it?
There is some evidence to suggest that the answer is yes!
In a study commissioned by Pacific Bioscience Laboratories Inc. (the laboratory behind the Clarisonic brand), Tadlock et al. found sonic facial brushes tackled up to 100% of ‘dirty skin’ (surface makeup, sebum, pollution, and colorants).
Manual cleansing (the control comparison) resulted in large amounts of debris left behind on the skin. The same study found the use of a sonic facial brush (on speed 2) removed pollution 35.8 times(!) better than manual cleansing.
Looking for a safe, deep cleanse to improve the quality and appearance of your skin over time? Facial brushes are worth the investment if you can afford one.
Digging deep with our fingertips to tackle blackheads and blemishes on bad skin days is tempting. I think we can all relate to scrubbing our face a little too vigorously with our hands.
The result? Almost always soreness, redness, and damaged, aggravated skin.
Cure the temptation and stop damaging your skin. Face cleansing brushes can be a safe alternative to such abrasive scrubbing when used correctly.
◊ Why Clarisonic?
Brand Reputation – An expert endorsed, number 1 cleansing device brand
Clarisonic is the number one cleansing device brand recommended and used by U.S. dermatologists (based on a 2016 survey of 424 dermatologists).
Dermatologist Dr. Stefanie Williams uses the Clarisonic brush and recommends it to certain patients to help remove harmful pollutants on the skin, and to better absorb skincare creams, serums, and moisturizers after cleansing.
MD Papri Sarkar also endorses the Clarisonic brand, “The sonic technology is great for cleansing, and the brush is the most effective and gentle I’ve tired so far.”
It’s not just the dermatologists who endorse the Clarisonic brand: many of the top skin care tools on Influenster (rated based on customer reviews) are Clarisonic products.
When you try out a new electronic product for the first time, especially on something as important as your skin, you can question whether or not it’s really safe or effective to use.
We can probably all relate to buying a cheap, too-good-to-be true item on AliExpress and not knowing if it’s really hurting or helping our skin!
The expert endorsement and brand reputation provides reassurance and puts your mind at ease from day one of using the Mia 2.
Clarisonic’s performance is back up by scientific evidence
Clarisonic brand brushes are often used in scientific studies to examine the effectiveness of facial cleansing brushes.
A NPD data study (2016) found skin absorbs Vitamin C 61% more effectively after using the Clarisonic cleanser compared to hand cleansing. 96% of women in the study experienced smoother, healthier-looking skin after using the Clarisonic for 1 week. Skin looks more rejuvenated after 2 weeks, and pores look smaller after 4 weeks of use.
The Clarisonic cleanses six times better than cleansing with hands, and the whole process works in just 60 seconds. The bristles are gentle enough to use twice a day.
Another study showed that the Clarisonic Smart PROfile brush boosted the effects of anti ageing cream when compared to a control group using the anti ageing cream on its own.
The scientific backing gives weight to Clarisonic’s claims about the Mia 2. But talk is cheap. What matters is how well the brush actually performs when you use it.

Why don’t the Clarisonic brushes spin or rotate?
Other brands use the classic rotating bristle technology. The rotating movement can cause friction and damage on your skin over time.
Instead of spinning, Clarisonic’s inside bristles utilize unique patented oscillating brush movements (10 degrees in each direction), providing 300 movements per second.
The small movements work with the skin’s natural elasticity for deep pore cleansing to remove the impurities that normal cleansers leave behind.
The bristles are developed from elastomeric polyester, non-porous material that helps prevent the build up of bacteria.
Unlike the alternative rotating technology, the oscillating technology is designed especially to prevent friction or damage to your skin over time – giving you peace of mind while you cleanse your face.
TL;DR – Why Clarisonic?
The expert endorsement, brand reputation, customer reviews, scientific backing, unique features, and safe, unique oscillating technology provides the reassurance needed to put your mind at ease from day one of using the Mia 2.
◊ Why The Mia 2?
The Mia 2, described by Clarisonic as the ‘fan favorite’ facial brush, is rated very highly by customer reviews on Influenster.
Some customers note the cleansing brush is very similar to the now discontinued Clarisonic MD.
At first glance, it appears very similar to the Mia 1 model. How do they compare?
Clarisonic Mia vs Mia 2

♥ Flexible setting speeds – customize it to your needs!
The Mia 2 features 2 different facial cleansing speeds – delicate (low) & universal (normal).
When your Clarisonic arrives, it will be default set on the low speed. When using the low speed, the lower LED button around the power button will light up.
To change the speeds, just press the speed button while the device is turned on. The upper LED around the power button will illuminate when using the normal speed.
Both speeds on the Mia 2 offer at least a six times better cleanse than hand cleansing.
Cleansing brushes like the Mia 2 provide the added bonus of flexible use – the lower speeds are great for people with sensitive skin, while higher speeds provide a deeper clean. Much better and safer than scrubbing at your face with your hands!
The delicate (low) speed works great for cleansing in the morning. It is suited especially well to sensitive skin, and for general use in the winter months.
In the Tadlock et al. study, speed made a huge impact to performance. While a lower speed can provide a more gentle clean for sensitive skin, performance in the study differed 76% between the highest and lowest speeds on the sonic brush.
The bristles on Clarisonic brushes oscillate deeper on faster speeds. Use the universal (normal) speed for makeup removal at night, sunscreen, or before you apply anti-aging products.
The flexibility of the Mia 2 brush speeds allows you to go more sensitive or opt for a deeper clean to deal with different skin situations. Your skin can change with the weather, it can evolve as you get older, and can breakout in response to hormonal changes. If your skin isn’t static, your skin care routine shouldn’t be either!
♥ How long should you cleanse?! The T-Timer tells you!
The Mia 2 has a timing feature to help you guide the brush across your face as you cleanse.
The brush is set to a one minute cleanse – 20 seconds on the forehead, 20 seconds on your nose/chin, and 10 seconds on each cheek.
The 60 second T-timer pauses momentarily (beeps or vibrates, depending on the model) to indicate that it is time to move to another part of your face.
You cannot customize the length or turn off the T timer.
However, you can pause the cleansing cycle for up to 30 seconds by pressing the on/off button. The lights around the button fade in and out while in pause mode. To resume, press the on/off button again.
This feature is great if you’re new to brush cleansing. It will help put your mind at ease if you’re not sure how long the brush cleanse should last. Just follow the timing system and you should see the promised results. However, if you’re a pro at cleansing, you might think this feature is pointless.
◊ How Does The Clarisonic Work?
The brush uses sonic micro-massage action to cleanse deeply. The patented oscillation technology flushes pores with water for surface and deep pore cleansing.
The Mia 2 gently clears pores without harsh abrasion or chemicals; cleansing so effectively that skin care products absorb better. Results include: 6 times better cleansing than manual cleansing; reduced appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles; and improved skin tone.
Is the Mia 2 easy to use?
It’s easy to use – it only takes 60 seconds per cleanse. The Mia 2 handle is hermetically sealed and completely waterproof for use in the shower or bathtub.
- Remove eye makeup by hand before using the facial brush.
- Wet your skin and the radiance brush head with warm water.
- Apply a generous amount of your cleanser of choice to the brush head or your skin.
- Press the on/off button to turn on the brush.
- Put the speed on low for a gentler cleanse, or the higher speed for a deeper cleanse.
- Gently move the brush in a circular motion on damp facial skin.
- The T-Timer will vibrate or beep when it is time to move to a different part of the face.
- Do not press the brush head too hard against the skin – this will impede the motion and result in a less effective cleanse, and could lead to broken capillaries.
Most of us have quite a busy lifestyle. There’s just no time for a ten minute cleansing routine. We need to quickly get up and go in the morning, and we’re so exhausted at night we just want to wash our face quickly and hop straight into bed.
The 60 second Mia 2 cleanse is great if you’re time constrained. The charger lasts 20-24 minutes, so you don’t need to recharge often. The T Timer function means you’re guaranteed to only spend one minute on your cleanse morning and night. It’s waterproof so you can even cleanse in your shower!
While the brush is certainly an investment, it probably beats the hassle of a 10 step cleansing routine when you just can’t be bothered!
How does the charger work?
The Clarisonic charger is magnetic and easy to use.
However, some customers find the magnetic charger system quite gimmicky. A non-magnetic charger would probably have worked just as well.
The USB-enabled charger is compatible with 100-240 volts and can be used worldwide with an approved country adapter.
Each full charge lasts 20-24 minutes, so you won’t need to recharge very often! You typically need to charge about once a month with daily use.
The charging cord magnetically attaches to the underside of the device.
- Place the pLink charger on the front of the handle.
- You should feel a vibration to indicate the charger is connected.
- The charge indicator lights will glow solid once completely charged.
If you lose your magnetic charger, you can buy a replacement on Amazon.
How long does it take to show results?
Some improvements to your skin are typically noticeable after the first week. By the eight week, you should notice a significant difference in your skin.
- After 1 Week skin looks more radiant.
- In 2 Weeks, skin appears more rejuvenated with improved cell turnover.
- Using the brush for 4 Weeks results in deeply cleansed skin, with pores appearing less visible.
- After the 8 Weeks point, you should see healthier looking skin.

♥ The legendary ‘Clarisonic Purge’
Some users experience temporary skin breakouts when they start using a facial cleansing brush for the first time.
It’s a temporary breakout, and it is NOT something unique to the Clarisonic or facial brushes in general.
Some think the ‘Clarisonic purge’ is an urban legend. It’s not.
It often occurs within the first month of starting a new skincare regime. When you radically change up your skincare routine, it’s likely your skin will have a reaction. It’s normal.
Cleansing facial brushes clean deep and bring out all the toxins in your skin to the surface – it’s not surprising that some users temporarily breakout.
Keep going with your routine even if your skin gets temporarily worse. The purge period WILL pass and your skin should look and feel better than ever if you just push through it!
So what should you do to deal with the ‘Clarisonic purge’?
- Be gentle not to apply too much pressure while you cleanse.
- Make sure you replace your brush head regularly (the Mia 2 will play music to tell you when you need to change the brush).
- Keep the Mia 2 on the lowest speed for the first month or so for a more gentle inital cleanse.
◊ TL;DR – All About The Mia 2
- Fan favorite – top rated Skincare Tool on Influenster,
- Comes with the brush, charger, ‘Radiance’ brush head, and 1 ounce cleansing gel.
- More expensive than the Mia 1, but has more features.
- The Special T-Timer and multiple speed settings make cleansing more flexible and easier (especially for beginners or people with sensitive skin).
- Easy to use and only takes 60 seconds per cleanse.
- Need to recharge every month or so with daily use.
- Significant results should be clear after 8 weeks. Your skin can undergo the ‘Clarisonic purge’ for a temporary period.
◊ Is The Mia 2 For Me?
♥ Is it for sensitive skin?
Mia 2 is suitable for all skin types, but it’s especially good for sensitive skin.
Dermatologist Dr Tadlock recommends starting slow with the Clarisonic if you suffer from rosacea or other types of sensitive skin – use the brush every three days and gradually increase your use from there.
While Clarisonic does not call the brush an exfoliator, as medical dermatologist Dr Schultz notes, as it is a brush it does provide light physical exfoliation.
The low speed option is gentile on the skin, and the flexibility in speed makes the Mia 2 a much better option than the Mia 1 for sensitive skin.
The oscillating brush is soft on the skin. The softness reduces the likelihood of broken capillaries that can be caused by aggressive scrubbing or abrasive brushes.
The T-timer feature is useful for those with sensitive skin. Timed brushing can prevent irritation caused by over-cleansing on one part of your face.
Just like the Mia 1, the Mia 2 comes with the ‘Radiance’ cleansing brush head.
The ‘Radiance’ cleansing brush head is intended to provide a radiance from within effect, and perk up dull skin.
Many customers like how gentle and soft this brush head is – some say it’s softer, gentler, and more luxurious feeling than the specific ‘Sensitive’ Clarisonic brush head!
Reviewers that don’t suffer with sensitivity find this brush head too soft for their skin.
The thought of a brush scrubbing at and irritating the skin is the last thing anyone with sensitive skin needs! The low speed option, T-timer, and ‘Radiance’ brush head all combined, make this brush an excellent choice for anyone with sensitive skin.
♥ Is it for acne?
It works well for some with acne, but always consult your doctor before using a facial cleansing brush
Many customers with acne have a positive experience overall with Clarisonic brushes. Clarisonic has an impressine average rating on Acne.org.
Clarisonic have a brush head specifically designed for acne prone skin. The ‘Acne Cleansing’ brush head is well loved – with favorable reviews on the official Clarisonic website.
For whiteheads. blackheads, and pore minimization – try out the ‘Deep Pore Cleansing’ brush head. It works well for all skin types with enlarged pores and uses dual action bristles to flush out pore clogging oil and debris.
If you’re concerned about aggravating your skin, be as gentle as possible when you start out with the Clarisonic. A lot of acne sufferers experience the ‘Clarisonic purge’ discussed above.
If you suffer from any kind of skin condition, be sure to consult with your doctor before using any facial cleansing brush.
The Mia 2 and ‘Radiance’ brush head is nice and sensitive to get started with. Cleanse on the lowest speed initially, and don’t use the brush everyday in the beginning.
♥ Is it for mature skin?
Many mature customers noticed a difference in the appearance of their fine lines and wrinkles. Some younger customers attribute the brush in part to the fact that they don’t have many wrinkles yet!
♥ Can I use it on my body?
The Mia 2 is not compatible with the Clarisonic Plus body brush and should not be used all over the body.
Looking for a body brush? Check out the Clarisonic Plus. It has a five minute timer for the body with a bigger, firmer brush head for body cleansing. It is interchangeable for the face too, but it is much more expensive than the Mia 2.
The Mia 2 can, however, be used on the décolletage and chest area to improve texture, glow, and reduce signs of sun damage. It’s great on this area for more mature skin to regain a youthful appearance, or for younger skin to prevent the signs of ageing.
♥ Can men use this?
And there’s a facial brush head available specifically designed for men’s skin: the ‘Alpha Fit’ brush head.
♥ TL;DR – Is The Mia 2 For Me?
- Great for anyone (women and men) with sensitive and/or mature skin.
- Can work really well for some people with acne-prone skin. Always consult your doctor first if you have a skin condition.
- Should NOT be used all over the body but it works nicely on the décolletage and chest area!

◊ Does It Walk The Walk? What The Public Really Think
Overall, the Mia 2 has very positive reviews across multiple platforms. The white, pink, and holiday value set all have similarly high reviews. The Mia 2 is top rated in skincare tools on reviewer site Influenster.
While the vast majority of customers are happy with their product, it’s not the best choice for everyone. There are certain features that many customers found unnecessary for their particular needs.
Who does it work for?
Customers with all skin types – combination skin, dry skin, and oily skin, have been impressed with the Clarisonic Mia 2. The high satisfaction rate across all skin types means you don’t have to worry much about the Mia 2 and ‘Radiance’ brush head being compatible with your skin.
Do customers like the Clarisonic Skincare?
Reviewers generally have mixed reviews on the cleansing gel that comes with the Mia 2.
Some love the gel cleanser and find the brush works much better with the Clarisonic skincare than with other brands.
Others think there are products that do an equally great, or better job with the Mia 2, usually at a lower cost (For eg. Proactiv, Neutrogena, and Ponds).
What’s great about facial cleansing brushes is you don’t have to use the Clarisonic brand products with the brush. You can find the perfect combination for you by mixing and matching different products through trial and error. One reviewer finds bentonite clay and a little jojoba oil is the perfect combo for cleansing her skin with the Mia 2!
Whether you love organic and natural products, drugstore finds, or luxury cleansing creams – the cleansing brush is adaptable to be used with your preferred cleansing products.
What results did customers experience?
A lot of customers experience the ‘Clarisonic purge’ (discussed above) when they initially start using the brush.
Some customers, who were not aware of the ‘purge period’ were put off the Clarisonic and stopped using it.
Again, it’s important to stress that when you change up your skin routine, a skin purge is a strong possibility. Keep going through it and you should experience better skin in the long run! Many customers were impressed with how much clearer their skin looked after prolonged use of the Mia 2.
The most common benefits of the Mia 2 according to reviewing customers are:
- Buffed away dead skin flakes
- Helped reduce the appearance of acne
- Reduced clogged pores on the nose and chin
- Minimized the appearance of acne scars
- Reduced the appearance of blackheads
- Made the skin feel clean, soft, and exfoliated
Some reviewers remarked that their clearer skin after using the Mia 2 helped them gain their confidence back.
Skin issues can be linked with confidence issues for so many people. I struggled with acne as a teen, and I know how devastating it can be to constantly worry about being judged because of breakouts. It’s amazing that the impact of one brush tool can alter someone’s life in such a significant way.
What do they think about the unique Mia 2 features?
Customers had mixed reviews on the T-Timer feature.
The timer can be useful to make sure you cleanse all of your face for the appropriate amount of time. However, the timing/beeping feature can annoying and pointless for advanced cleansers.
Overall, the T-Timer is a great feature for people new to brush cleaning and deep cleansing. If you’re already an advanced skincare junkie, you will probably find this feature pointless.
The Multiple Speed Options
Generally customers with sensitive skin or acne issues liked the adaptable two speed options. However, customers with no particular skin issues found the two speeds unnecessary and wished they’d saved a small bit of money and purchased the Mia 1 model instead.
♥ What’s with the more negative reviews?!
Most of the negative reviews are from customers complaining about fake Mia 2 imitations being sold years ago on certain platform in 2013.
As of October 2016, Amazon is an authorized retailer of Clarisonic brand items. Clarisonic products designated as “sold by Amazon.com” are authentic and are eligible for the Clarisonic manufacturer’s limited warranty.
Some reviewers had issues with the Clarisonic Mia 2 breaking down.
If for some reason the Clarisonic stops working, or doesn’t work properly when you receive it, contact Clarisonic about the two year warranty. Further information about the two year warranty is discussed below.
♥ Does the Mia 2 cause broken capillaries?!
The facial brush is specifically designed to be gentile on your face.
If it’s gentile enough to brush on an egg – it’s gentle enough for your face!
Broken capillaries are usually the result of being too aggressive while cleansing, and this problem can occur with aggressive manual cleansing too.
Do not push hard against your skin when cleansing with the brush to avoid damage!
♥ The Clarisonic Mia 2 takes a long time to dry?
Many customers didn’t like the fact that the brush can take a long time to dry after use.
Hard water, storing the brush in the shower, and putting the travel cap on the brush head can all increase the risk of mold developing on your brush.
The Clarisonic drying stand (available on Amazon) can help the brush dry properly to prevent the build up of mold.
You can store your facial brush in a cosmetic size bag.
To dry, push the brush head against a towel.
Take the brush head off the handle after every use to air dry, and wash both the handle and brush head with warm soap water to prevent residue buildup.
◊ What Do You Need To Replace?
Clarisonic recommends changing the brush head every three months. A lot of customers find it’s unnecessary to change your brush so often, as long as you take good care of your brushes and wash them correctly.
A tune will start playing as a prompt to replace your brush head after 180 minutes of usage time has passed. Change the brush head and press and hold the power button for three seconds to reset.
Don’t have sensitive skin? You might find the Radiance brush head too soft. If you like the T-timer and 2 speed feature available with the Mia 2, just buy a targeted cleansing brush head to use with the Mia 2.
The Mia 2 is compatible with all 9 of the Clarisonic face brush heads available for sale:
- Everyday cleansing brush heads:Radiance (comes with the Mia 2), Revitalizing, Delicate, and Sensitive
- Targeted Cleansing brush heads:Deep pore, Acne, Cashmere Hydrating (very good for sensitive skin), and Men’s Daily brush
- Beyond cleansing:Sonic Foundation brush
The multiple brush head options are great for adapting the Clarisonic Mia 2 to suit your needs.
The batteries are rechargeable and do not need to be replaced.
♥ What if my Mia 2 stops working?
Unlike the one year Mia 1 warranty, the Clarisonic Mia 2 warranty covers a two year period.
The warranty covers any manufacturer defect-related problems resulting from everyday use of the product. Be sure to register your Clarisonic on the official website to ensure warranty coverage!
Amazon.com is an authorized seller since 2016. Each purchase bought through the official Amazon seller is covered under the two year warranty.
◊ Is The Mia 2 Worth The Money?
Most people could stand to benefit from a facial cleansing brush.
Maybe you live in a big city and find pollution is taking its toll on your skin?
Perhaps you’re a gym junkie and you worry you’re not cleansing your face deep enough after a work out?
The Mia 2 is certainly quite an impressive product. However, it’s not for everyone!
Is it for me?
Yes, if you fit the criteria!
In addition to the strong brand reputation, scientific backing, dermatologist endorsements, excellent customer reviews, and two year warranty – the unique T-timer and adjustable speed settings make this brush a great option for anyone with sensitive or changeable skin.
The timing feature means brush cleansing is fool proof, even for beginners. Avoid any confusion about how to cleanse from day one! The brush is soft and gentle enough (especially on the lowest speed!) to make big changes to the appearance and feel of your skin after continued use.
The lower speed options and soft ‘Radiance’ brush head means the Mia 2 is a good option for 1st time cleansing for someone with acne prone skin. What’s great about the multiple brush head options – you can change to the ‘Acne cleansing’ brush for a deeper clean in time. Always consult your doctor before using a cleansing brush if you have a skin condition.
Good value for money?
It is not a cheap product, however if it’s something you’re going to use every day or multiple times a week, the cost per use is low.
The warranty protection period lasts for 2 years. If you use it even just once a day for two years, that’s 730 cleansing sessions with the brush!
Some customers have had the same brush for 8 years – that’s 5,840 cleanses if used twice a day, everyday!
What if I’m already an advanced skincare junkie?
Yes – if you don’t like taking risks!
If you’re an advanced skincare user, don’t see the benefit of the T-timer setting, and don’t want the flexibility and security of two speed options – you do not necessarily need the Mia 2 model. The cheaper Mia 1 might be better for you.
However, it might be worth buying the Mia 2 instead of the Mia 1 purely to get the extra year’s warranty. The extra warranty will keep your mind at bay for longer if you’re worried the brush might break after a year!
No – if you want to save a bit of money!
Despite the lower warranty coverage, the Mia 1 is a good option for brush cleansing at a cheaper price.
The Mia 1 also has the backing of the strong Clarisonic brand reputation, scientific support, the oscillating brush technology, dermatologist endorsements, and excellent customer reviews. It lacks the T-Timer feature and the two speed settings. However, if you don’t suffer from sensitive skin and want a no-fuss cleansing brush, you probably won’t miss those features at all – the Mia 1 is a great option for you.
♥ BONUS: Tip to extend the life of your Clarisonic Mia 2
Your Mia 2 should last longer if you clean it regularly
- Disinfect the brush head every few weeks by soaking it in a diluted bleach mixture, then rinse and dry.
- Keeping the brush head clean will ensure you don’t need to replace brush heads as often, and helps prevents build up of bacteria and grime that might cause blemishes.
- Clean the rubber ‘lip’ prongs underneath the brush heads every month or so (you can use spray rubbing alcohol on that area).
- Buy the brush heads in bulk for a good discount.
